The Verdi Opera Selection - Shakespeare DVD Box Set

Various Artists

This 3-DVD set features the three Verdi operas based on Shakespeare's plays. Verdi's creative relationship with Shakespeare began in 1846 when he started working on Macbeth, his tenth opera at that point. Macbeth was released to critical and commercial success, having been performed in at least 21 locations during his lifetime. As sources, Shakespeare's plays provided Verdi with lifelong inspiration: some, such as an adaption of King Lear (as Re Lear), were never realized, but he wrote his two final operas using Othello as the basis for Otello (1887) and The Merry Wives of Windsor as the basis for Falstaff (1893). These masterworks here receive stellar performances from a pool of talented performers in three acclaimed performances.
